Just today one gerbil is hiding in the house while the other is exhibiting normal behavior. There is no violent behavior. When the one outside the house approaches the one hiding will come partially out but not allow the second into the house. Do they need to be separated and re introduced?

Hiding and not allowing the second gerbil in the house

One hiding and not allowing the other in sounds like a warning of a declanning coming. But if it's just today that it started, did anything change in their environment? Any new smells? If they're males, are there any females in heat nearby?
I agree with Cathy. I would actually remove the house so they don't fight over it.
They are females. Nothing has changed in the environment. So your suggestion would be to remove the house today? Hopefully this will correct the situation. Should I also divide the cage?
I would be prepared to split the cage. This could be a one off thing, or the start of a falling out. Definitely observe them. Sometimes with females they can get a little moody when one is in heat.
We have had them for two months, I was wondering if one of them may be in heat. Thanks for your help, it took me all day to find this site and I’m glad that I did!
