Hi all,
How many inches of bedding do gerbils require? There are so many conflicting articles that range between Petco/Petsmart saying they only need 1-2 inches, a bag of aspen shavings saying they only need 2-3 inches, some veterinary blogs saying 4-5 inches, and then only a few sites like Animal Humane Society that says 8-12 inches as the minimum. I believe 8-12 inches sounds more like the standard (at least based on photos I've seen of gerbilariums) but what do you guys think? I ask because the public library I work at has gerbils and the staff there generally only give them 3-5 inches of bedding and I'd like to give them much more but my supervisor believes that because of all this "conflicting information," that 3-5 inches is perfectly suitable and that giving them 8-12 would be way too much and could suffocate (?) them. She trusts the information on AGS but nothing on there that I can find gives a standard number of inches for bedding required
I start out about 3-4 inches. The gerbils will do the rest from chewing up cardboard.
