Hello! I am seeking advice because I do not know if I am being paranoid or not. I have two gerbil rescues (both female) that I have had for four years. They adore each other and have never had any issues. they have an amazing cage, an 8 foot wide, 2 feet tall, and two feet deep cage with glass doors and a wire top. They have two wheels, plenty of hiding places, more toys than you could imagine, water daily and endless amounts of food at all times. I live in a basement where the room is typically between 70-75 degrees with air conditioning. They are not directly by a window or near an air vent.
no matter what I do I see them occasionally on their back feet trying to find a way out. They don’t do it long and typically go back to running on their wheel but no matter what I just feel like they aren’t happy or that I’m doing something wrong… one side of the cage has almost 10 inches worth of bedding for digging and I supply them with hay once per week to chew on and burrow with that they love. Am I doing something wrong?? Are they unhappy or just studying their environment? I have tried everything I can think of, I don’t even turn my tv on anymore in my room because I thought the noise was too loud for them. I do have a fan I turn up to the second setting when I go to sleep but ive had it for years and it’s never bothered them. I even have it facing the opposite way so there is no draft. Please help or let me know I’m being paranoid because i try everything possible to give them a great life :(
That is an absolute relief to hear. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I just doubled the size of their home thinking they wanted more room but I suppose I overreacted, either way now they have a spacious home!!
Your gerbils are normal. All gerbils do that. From what you described, you have a gerbil paradise. They are fine. The tv doesn't bother them.
