Circadian Rhythm

Libby Hanna

2020 updates by Cathy Bickel

Gerbils are generally, but not strictly, crepuscular, meaning they are awake at dawn and dusk. They cycle in and out of active and sleeping periods throughout the day and night, with the heaviest activity occurring in the evening. Pet gerbils are very sensitive to human activity and will quickly learn at what times of day they have a better chance of being fed or played with. Their observations of household routines may cause their patterns to vary.

GerbILARIUMS

Showcase of various custom cages built for gerbils.

Be sure the size and type of cage is manageable and one you can keep clean. It's not all about size. Gerbils need stimulation and ideally time to explore out of the cage: gerbils love to run, climb, dig, nest, take dust baths, tunnel and chew.
