Seperating Gerbils

Libby Hanna

and Cathy Bickel

The situations under which it makes sense to separate gerbils are:

  • After a surprise litter. Please see the section on surprise litters: by the time the first litter is discovered, the mother gerbil will be pregnant again, and the father should normally be left in to help raise the first litter.
  • The gerbils fight
  • When instructed by the vet due to contagious illness
  • When separating a breeding male and female with a weaning litter

In all other situations, leave happy gerbils together. They love and need each other.
